Manchester and London (by Chris Smith)
Over June, July and August I've spent a total of three weeks in Wigan completing a course for work, this gave me a rare opportunity to work 'normal' 9-5 shifts, leaving me with free evenings. So, being in Wigan, the plan was to alternate between Manchester and Liverpool Airports, both a 40 minute drive, with perhaps the odd Chester/Hawarden and Barton Aerodrome thrown in for good measure. However, turns out the people I found myself on the course with are a really top bunch so I decided to stick with 'normal' and sunk a few Vodka's with them most evenings instead, making the first hour of each morning rather difficult to say the least but that's another story.
After the final week of training, I had a week off booked to allow for my involvement with our Skylive Air Show (what a waste of time that turned out to be!), so rather than returning home from the course, I decided to finally make it to at least Manchester Airport, before venturing south to London. When the Friday came around, I almost had an opportunity to expand my itinerary ten fold, as we had gone a bit wild the night before on the drink as it would be the last time we all saw each other, and to cut a long story short, four of us got reprimanded for being drunk and disorderly and disurbing other guests in the hotel, two were kicked off the course but unfortunately myself and another survived.
Friday 21st August
It was just a quick stop at Manchester, I headed straight to the top of the T1 multi-story car park, logged what was in, and left.

Thanks to my point of origin for this trip, I had a number of options available to me that I wouldn't have had if I set off from the north east as per usual, these being Birmingham, Coventry and Oxford Airports, RAF Brize Norton, and a whole host of GA fields, but due to setting off late in the afternoon, I had to pick and choose carefully which is a shame given I've been looking for ways to tick off all of the above airports for some time now. In the end I decided to make my Birmingham debut since it's along my route anyway, but again, it was just a quick in and out job.

I'd hoped to have time to stop by Oxford, but unfortunately not so I made my way direct to my digs at Heathrow Terminal 5 Travelodge instead where I wasn't able to get an airport-facing room, but a top floor room still offered me views of aircraft departing 27L which was sufficient.

I decided to (at extra expense) spend the night in the Holiday Inn Express here, given it's very favourable views over a couple of the GA ramps and parts of the terminal (north-facing rooms) or the runway (south-facing rooms). I requested a high level room at check-in and got a runway-facing room, though it doesn't matter as the corridors have spotting spots looking out each side!! It's also nice to be able to park here for the correct reason, and not feel guilty as hell when you go to pay for your parking ticket at the desk and have to answer "no" when they ask if you've stayed!! It's also nicer (and much easier) to have the time to walk from the hotel right around to the far Harrods ramp and back, gaining me photos I would not normally get from in the car.
